Mirleft or Taghazout: Which Destination in Morocco Is Right for Your next Surf Trip?

Over the past decade, Morocco has become one of the world’s most popular surf destinations. The coastline north of Agadir—from Tamraght and Taghazout all the way to Imsouane—is internationally renowned for its world-class point and beach breaks. For many surfers, a trip here quickly turns into an annual tradition, with plans for the next Morocco surf adventure already taking shape before the current one ends.

Yet there’s another side to Morocco’s surf scene that remains relatively undiscovered: the region south of Agadir.

Nestled along the Atlantic coast, the small town of Mirleft offers a wide variety of surf spots that can satisfy surfers of all levels. Beyond the waves, Mirleft provides a more authentic glimpse into Moroccan culture and daily life.

So, which destination is the better fit for your surf trip: Taghazout or Mirleft?

The answer depends entirely on what you’re looking for in your Moroccan surf holiday.

Best Time to Surf: Taghazout vs. Mirleft

The main surf season is similar in both regions. From late October onwards, powerful Atlantic swells begin to reach Morocco’s coastline and continue consistently through May.

During the summer months, however, Mirleft has a distinct advantage.

Summer swells tend to be smaller and arrive from a different direction. Thanks to its open exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, Mirleft continues to receive quality waves even during the off-season. In contrast, Taghazout’s coastline is more sheltered, which often results in smaller surf or flat conditions during summer.

If you're planning a summer surf trip to Morocco, Mirleft may offer more reliable conditions.

Atmosphere: Vibrant Surf Town or Authentic Morocco?

Over the years, Taghazout has transformed into a lively surf town built around tourism. You'll find trendy cafés, rooftop bars, surf shops, and a vibrant international community.

Looking to end your surf sessions with sunset drinks, craft beer, and an iced matcha latte? Taghazout is the place for you. Cafés overlooking the famous Anchor Point and stylish spaces with a European feel are everywhere.

Mirleft offers a different experience.

Tourism is present, but it blends naturally into everyday Moroccan life. There is two bars in town, while local cafés remain the social heart of the community. Here, you'll share a traditional nosnos—half coffee, half milk—or a glass of fresh mint tea with locals. You won’t find latte art, but you will find genuine hospitality and an authentic atmosphere.

Mirleft is also an excellent place to shop for handcrafted Moroccan rugs, pottery, and clothing—often at more reasonable prices than in Taghazout.

If relaxation and authenticity matter most, Mirleft is the clear winner. If you’re after a lively social scene, Taghazout has the edge.

The Waves: Crowded Classics or Hidden Gems?

Taghazout is famous for iconic surf breaks such as Anchor Point, Desert Point, and Banana Point. These world-class waves have earned the region its legendary reputation.

What many surfers don’t realize is that Mirleft offers an equally impressive variety of quality waves, including several excellent point breaks.

Spots like Tamhroucht, Aftass, Rastapoint, and a number of local secret spots provide consistent surf opportunities away from the crowds. Many of these locations are intentionally kept off social media to preserve their character.

One of Taghazout’s biggest challenges today is overcrowding. During peak season, lineups can become packed, making sessions frustrating.

Mirleft remains far less crowded, giving surfers more waves and more space in the water.

As for the common belief that Mirleft is less consistent than Taghazout—it’s largely a myth. With local knowledge and flexibility, quality surf is available on most days.

For wave count alone, Mirleft has a strong advantage.

Surf Levels: Great for Beginners and Advanced Surfers

Whether you're paddling out for the first time or chasing high-performance waves, both Mirleft and Taghazout cater to all skill levels.

Beginner-friendly beach breaks, intermediate options, and advanced point breaks can be found in both regions, making either destination suitable for surfers of every experience level.
